Seasonal Shopping: Summer

These seasonal shopping guides are a way to demystify seasonal eating. Often times what’s in season is more abundant, more fresh and nutrient dense, more environmentally sustainable, and more cost-effective. I hope these lists, which are not all encompassing and will change region to region, inspire you to craft your seasonal meals and menus so you too can sync up to the natural rhythms in your environment!

Summer in Southern Ontario is from approximately May through July but of course that changes day by day, year by year. And a note about tropical fruit listed below, these fruits grow in regions near the equator. If you don’t live in a place where these foods flourish, I recommend limiting your intake of them in the colder months. The foods we eat give our bodies the signals they need to prepare us for the external environment, so consuming tropical foods tells our system that we are in a very warm and humid place! I like to eat these foods on occasion in the summer, since that is when we experience the most heat here in the Northern hemisphere, and keep them to a bare minimum in the winter.

Let me know how it goes for you!
