I had never actually seen white currants until moving to Denmark, where they grow in my mother-in-law’s garden.
Totally surreal in their transparency, gazing into one is like witnessing an entire universe inside a crystalline globe of sun-ripened juice. I tried photographing them on the bush without much success, so I picked a bunch and brought them home to eat. After washing them, I laid them out on a cookie sheet to dry so that I could freeze a few, and the dark background made the little berries pop in such a way that I knew I had found a way to capture their beauty.
