This smoothie was inspired by my dear friends Ally and Casey, the owners of Canyon Coffee in LA.
I first met these two many years ago when I was still living in Copenhagen – Ally had come to an event of mine in Los Angeles, and while her and Casey were spending time in Denmark, they came over for a cozy afternoon of rye bread sandwiches, cakes, and coffee. I loved hearing about their passion project, Canyon Coffee which they had just started. Their excitement was contagious, even for a non-coffee drinker like me! I truly admire what they have built, but more importantly, how they have done it.
I recognize that there are many coffee roasters far and wide, mostly owned by people who unjustly benefit off the land, labour, hearts, and communities of faraway lands. Though coffee is not a part of my lifestyle, I use it to elevate the flavor of chocolate or to add a little pick-me-up in a smoothie like this one. I also recognize that my circumstance, privilege, and place in the world affords me (and many of my friends and family) the opportunity to use this seemingly mundane, beloved agricultural ingredient with abandon. Through their travels Ally and Casey were inspired by coffee culture around the world and share this passion not only for the coffee, but their passion for humanity through their coffee.
