Today we’re talking about a very special organ, unique to Chinese Medicine. Meet the Triple Heater, otherwise known as the Triple Warmer / Triple Burner!

Unlike the organs we’ve covered so far, the Triple Heater does not correspond with one specific organ in Western Medicine. Instead, you can think of it as a large cavity within the body comprising all of your vital organs, bringing them in unison to support your body’s entire functioning.

The triple heater works two-fold: controlling the flow and excretion of water, as well as the production and displacement of energy throughout the body.

The ability for fluids to move within the body depends on Qi (life’s energy or vital essence), which is controlled by the triple heater. When Qi moves gracefully, fluids flow in and out of each organ with ease, harmonizing them to help the body function as one beautiful unit.

Broken into 3 heaters, each has a slightly different role. The upper heater sits above the diaphragm holding the heart and lungs. It governs respiration and works to diffuse fluids throughout all of the organs, tissues, and skin.

The middle heater rests in the center of your body, between the diaphragm and umbilical region. It’s home to the Gallbladder, Spleen, and Stomach, breaking down nutrients to distribute them throughout your body.

Finally, the lower heater falls below the umbilical area, comprising the Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Kidneys, Bladder, and Uterus. Although the Liver rests in the middle of your body, it too falls into this heater given its close connection with the kidneys. Being the largest section of the 3, it works hard to filter and eliminate “gunk” that can accumulate inside.

An imbalance may show up as fluid retention (edema), diarrhea / constipation, and frequent or difficult urination. Hydration is key here! With the summer in full bloom, nutrient-dense smoothies are a great way to stay cool and get in plenty of extra liquids. Other hydrating foods include cucumbers, pears, tomatoes, celery, iceberg lettuce, cauliflower, zucchini, watermelon, and grapefruit.

Be sure to get regular movement in as well, however that looks for you. Moving prevents stagnation, encouraging the flow of Qi and thus fluids, throughout your body.

To bring the triple heater back into balance, it’s important to give a little extra love to the lungs, spleen, and kidneys. For extra support, take a peek at my previous posts regarding these precious organs.
